The weekend of the 4th of July we went up beautiful Brighton Canyon and spent some time at the Johnson's cabin (ski lodge). It was gorgeous, from the mountains to the lakes to the meadows. We thoroughly enjoyed nature, starting with a hike up to Lake Mary (2 miles round trip). And then canoeing, and of course eating all day long! So much fun, and what an amazing place to make memories with an amazing family. And of course...ending the day with s'mores :)

It was a great day. So many friends and family showed up to run or walk for my team. Thanks to all of you for your support. And thanks to those of you who couldn't be there, but donated $ in my name. I love you all. The race was awesome, as you can see. Over 17,000 participants! The weather was perfect and everyone had a good time. I was able to be in the survivors parade this year and stand on the steps for the annual picture. It was quite inspiring to be there among so many survivors. After the race the family gathered at Shannon's home for a yummy birthday brunch, hanging out, and then birthday cake and ice cream. Later that evening the adults went to a movie and dinner while the girls danced and played under the supervision of Emrey, Haley and Liv. We sure miss Tay and Susie (and kids) at times like this. But it was wonderful, and I'm really grateful for my many and wonderful blessings.

The Salt Lake City RACE FOR THE CURE will be held on my birthday, May 8th. I want to invite everyone to join my team "Shirlene's Shufflers" and run/walk the 5K or 1 mile. This is a really great event to save lives and end breast cancer forever. Up to 75% of the funds raised from this race remain in our community to support local grants for breast cancer screening, treatment and awareness programs. The remining 25% is sent to the Komen headquarters in Dallas to help fund research grants programs. Last year there were over 17,000 participants and it was awesome to be a part of the "pink sea" of runners. Thanks to those of you who have already signed up! I'll be looking for you in front of Dicks at the Gateway prior to the start of the race. Thanks for being on my "team" whether you run or not. Your "cheering me on" from the sidelines with your love and prayers is the greatest blessing of my life.

2010 A New Year - A New Life!!

Hello Everyone! It has been a very l-o-n-g time since I've posted so I thought it wast time to bring you up to date..... We had a great 2009 holiday season beginning with Thanksgiving here. Shannon, Chris, and Brandon's families joined us along with GG Joyce for good food and fun. Since it was not my year to have the family here for Christmas we packed up and headed for New York to spend it with Taylor, Susie and the boys. What a blast we had! Even though it was absolutely freezing we ventured in to the city a few times and ate at some fabulous places including Bobby Flay's Mesa Grill and my all time favorite Max Brenner's (a chocolate lovers haven)! Taylor took a few days off so the six of us had a ball together shopping, eating at famous and local spots and sightseeing. Those of you who know Susie also know that she is one amazing "chef" and we were the happy recipients of some delictable dishes including her famous beans. (She'd win a throwdown with Bobby Flay!) Tay and Susie are the greatest for opening up their home and providing great entertainment as well. Of course the best entertainment for Poppy and I was the boys. They really are the BEST!! It was very sad to leave them, but with their baby sister due in March we plan to see them soon.
We returned to Salt Lake after the new year and celebrated Mike's 61st birthday! He recently had a lens replacement in his left eye and is thrilled that he's been able to give up his glasses. We traveled to Arizona the last week of January for Kiewit's District meetings and enjoyed the beautiful weather there. My good friend Debbie picked me up one afternoon and we had a fun afternoon together at the Scottsdale Mall.
February 6th was Sofey's baptism. She is one special little lady, and we are so grateful to have her in our family. I wasn't sure I would be able to do it, but I finished her baptizm quilt just one hour prior to her getting wet! This has been a tradition in the past with GG Hughes embroidering a cloth with the granddaughter's name and baptism date on it. The girls choose several different (coordinating) materials and after they are cut into squares they design their own quilt. I incorporate the embroidered cloth and bind it to their wishes. I'll post a picture of Sofey's quilt soon. We're also finishing a book for her which will include letters and testimonies from family and pictures of her special day.
A Valentine tradition in our family is grandchildren receiving a bathing suit from Grandma and Poppy..... but this year the three older girls got a card with some money to go towards a bathing suit, but all the others received their valentine suit! Fun for grandma and thanks to Abbey and Sofey for trying on over a dozen suits to help me find sizes!!!!
Emrey is now dating and driving!!!!!! Sooooo she went to the Bingham high Sweethearts dance for Valentines and I'll post pictures of that, too. She is a beautiful, sweet, talented YW and a great example to her sisters and cousins.
Chris and Kristen and girls are getting settled in their beautiful home after months of remodeling, and are enjoying life here in Utah. Brandon and Dawn absolutely love Midway and now that their best friends from AZ have moved up there with them I don't think they'll ever move down to the valley, and I don't blame them! Shannon and Jaren love their new home and neighborhood and are busy with their church callings. Shannon will turn 40 years old tomorrow. It seems impossible. I think it was just a few days ago that Mike and I were coaxing our little volkswagon up E street to the LDS hospital where she was born?!? My how time flies.
Life is good, and I am more than grateful for good health, family, and friends. I am getting used to the "new" me (as my doctors put it) and I think my family is too. I love them more than words can say, and thank the Lord that so many are near me and I'm able to see them often. I'll post pictures soon, but gotta run. It's my bookclub night. I love bookclub, and my friends there. till next time......

Family Fun

Thanks to Livi and Haley for posting "Picture updates" on my blog. Everyone is getting used to my chemo hair but me. It still surprises me when I look in the mirror, but please don't think I'm complaining. Even though the curls are out of control it's a blessing to have hair. I'm told the curl lasts about a year after chemo then it begins to relax - so we'll see!

Susie and the boys came for a visit and we had a ball. The girls couldn't get enough of them and it was a very sad day for all of us when they had to go home. Ian is a gentleman/scholar extraordinaire! and Colton is pure comedian! Between the two of them it was entertainment 24/7 and we loved every minute of it. We were on the go almost everyday and have fun memories of swimming at Lifetime, Lagoon, Liberty Park, the Children's museum downtown, miniature golfing, Midway, shopping, movies, and hanging out at Grandma's. We sure missed Taylor, but Susie is a wonderful, sweet daughter-in-law and I just can't thank her enough for making the brutal 12 hour trip (each way!!) with the boys so the family could be together.

Chris and Kristen were supposed to have been here during Susie's stay BUT they sold their home in AZ in July so they were packing like crazy and preparing for their move to Utah!!! They arrived on the 9th of August- just two days before Susie left- homeless, and without a job . Chris was a "little" stressed at first but now that he has secured a fabulous job, purchased a beautiful home in Sandy, and the girls are settled in school they are happy to be here. We are THRILLED out of our minds to have them here and love having our Sunday dinners with 11 happy, screaming, laughing girls once again.

It is an absolute miracle to have Brandon and Chris with their families living close by. I know I don't deserve it, but I am the most grateful and happy mom/grandma in the world.
We're all looking forward to our family vacation the end of September, and I can't wait to be with my little boys, and Tay and Susie again.

I continue to be amazed at the love and blessings the Lord offers me. His tender mercies abide with me daily and give me strength to carry on. He has heard the prayers and pleadings on my behalf and granted me blessings greater than I deserve. I'm tolerating my biological treatments (oral anit-cancer drug) and beginning to feel stronger every day. Friday will be the first of several reconstruction surgeries. It will be a quick outpatient surgery to replace the left tissue expander that had to be removed in December. My surgeon is very optomistic and I extend my deep gratitude for good doctors, a great ward, and cherished friends and family.

BYE BYE CANCER!!

I'm Olivia, Shirlene's granddaughter. I'm posting for her today because her computer isn't working. On Monday, my grandma had her last herceptin infusion. All of my cousins and I made a poster board that we had all signed and wrote little things like, "Our Grandma is tough!", and, "Our Grandma is AMAZING!" Haley and I made a heart shaped cake with the Breast Cancer ribbon on it (made out of sprinkles.) We all walked in to surprise her with pink balloons, our card, and our cake. All of the patients in the infusion center were very excited to watch all 10 grandchildren go and sit by our grandma. After her treatment was over, she got to ring the bell. All of the nurses and patients clapped and hoorayed. We all love our Grandma SO much and we are all so excited that she is done with cancer! She was so brave and strong throughout this whole year. Grandma has been so amazing with the best attitude. She has taught us all the meaning of gratitude this year. We love her so much and are so proud of her, but now it's time to say, BYE BYE CANCER!!!

Lola Jane Seare arrived at 11:55 A.M. July 1st weighing in at 6 lbs. 5 oz. She is our 13th grandchild, and I can't even tell you how thrilled we are to have this beautiful baby girl join our family. Both Dawn and Lola are doing great....they've been through alot this past nine months and it is a blessing and a miracle to have them both here. Dawn admitted she gave a huge sigh of relief once she could see how perfect and healthy Lola is. Zoe and Tatym are amazed at how tiny she is, and love holding their new baby sister. Brandon is a very proud and grateful dad.

Curly Hair

It's been quite a while since I last posted and just wanted to get everyone up to date. I'm looking forward to my very last treatment which will be July 7th!!!! I get to ring the bell and say goodbye to my wonderful nurses at the Infusion Center.... hopefully for good. My hair is coming in nice and thick and very, very, very CURLY. They tell me it will losen up in about 10 months but I can't wait that long to shed my wig now that summer is here. Any advice?
We did get to New York with Abbey and Ivy and had a wonderful time. Memorial weekend was huge for us as we moved Shannon and her family out of our basement into their new home. We also moved my mom into a beautiful retirement home, and Brandon and Dawn moved up here to Midway!!! Everyone is exausted, but settled and happy. Dawn is scheduled for an induction on the 30th, but hoping she'll go into labor on her own before then. We can't wait for Lola!! I'm working on her quilt and hope it will be ready by the time she gets here.
It's been so fun having Brandon, Dawn, Zoe, and Tatym join us along with Shannon's family for Sunday dinners. When the GG's and Auntie join us we're about the size we were in AZ, just different faces!
Saturday is a reunion for the Liberty Park Ward. It's located in Salt Lake City and the ward I attended for 18 years. I'll be taking my mom who is one of the oldest living members. We're really looking forward to it and hope to see lots of friends from the old neighborhood.
Summer has finally arrived in Utah, and life is good. I'm grateful to a loving Heavenly Father who has blessed me abundantly and to family and friends who continue to support me along this journey. It will be one year on the 27th when I was first diagnosed. I wouldn't be here today without your love prayers......THANK YOU!!!!

RACE FOR THE CURE

What a day! Many thanks to everyone who ran or walked on May 9th for my team "Shirlene's Shufflers". Angie Seare was our team leader and she did a great job getting everything organized for us. I wish we had pictures of all my supporters, but it was impossible with 18,000 participants!! It was really thrilling to cross the finish line even though it took me quite a long time. I didn't know until I arrived there that Shannon had signed me up for the 5K, so I went for it and felt great for 2.9 miles. Mike and Sofey shuffled with me every step of the way and had to practically carry me in. Participants were given a pink paper to pin on their backs listing the person(s) they were celebrating or remembering, and it was very emotional for me to see my name on the backs of so many. Survivors were given pink shirts and hats and I was really surprised to see so many. I'm really grateful I was able to participate, and look forward to improving my time (alot) next year!!

NY Postponed

Abbey and Ivy will both turn 10 years old this year, and they have been looking forward to our tradition of taking our 9 year olds on a vacation. This tradition began the year Taylor moved to Virginia for Dental School and we drove Emrey across the U.S. with us in order to get Susie's car there. It's hard to believe Emrey will be sixteen years old come November! We loved our 9 yr old trip with Haley and Livy in 2005 visiting all the sights in VA and spending time with their new cousin Ian. This trip with Abbey and Ivy was scheduled to begin with flights out of SLC this past weekend, but I was in the hospital recovering from bowel resection surgery. I went to the ER on Sunday the 29th and found out I had two kinks and a stricture which required surgery. I was released the following Saturday afternoon and today I'm hopeful for a full recovery and rescheduling our New York trip. Abbey will turn 10 on the 22nd so I'd like to take her in to Manhattan for dinner and a broadway show. She and Ivy have not said one word about their cancelled trip, but have expressed in so many ways their love and concern for me in recovering from this surgery and getting well. Ian and Colton are really sad that they didn't get to see their Poppy, but Ian called me today to let me know he planted a seed that will soon be a flower that I can take home from New York. I sure hope we'll be able to go, and hope it will be soon.

Fun in the Sun

My mother-in-law, Cyndee, and Connie (sisters-in-law) showed up at the Huntsman Center with cookies, flowers, and gifts for my ringing the bell ceremony!!!! One problem; I went in two hours early that day so I wouldn't miss my flight and by the time they got there I was almost to the airport. I was very, very sad but my doctor, technicians, and nurses loved the party! They have been my "cheerleaders" through this journey and I can't thank them enough.
It was good to be in Arizona soaking up the sun and helping (a little) with Dawn. She had her final visit with the Neurologist just a few days before I left, and he gave her the go ahead to drive. She's improving by leaps and bounds and looks forward to a full recovery. I had a great time staying at their home during the week, and then going to Chris and Kristen's for the weekends. The weather was perfect for playing at the park, going to the mall, eating outside at Paradise Bakery, and going to the movies. I especially loved my "special day" outings with the girls. It's been a long time. I am so grateful that I was able to go, and recognize the hand of the Lord in it.
Thanks to the Ashland Ranch Ward ladies who showed up for our get-together dinner! I cannot tell you how great it was to see you. It was absolutely healing to be with you and get a hug. I made sure I had my camera before I left so I could get lots of pictures, but with the excitment of seeing everyone I totally forgot about it! If any of you are willing, I'd love some pics to post on my blog. Thanks again. I love you dearly.

Ringing the Bell

Tomorrow is my last day of radiation!!!!! Hooray. The Huntsman Center has a cast iron bell that only patients who have completed treatment get to ring. Patients are encouraged to bring family and friends for the "big event" so Shannon will accompany me in the morning. It's almost unbelievable that chemo and radiation are behind me. What a blessing! I will continue to go to the infusion center at Huntsman every third Monday for my Herceptin treatments until July, and I will really ring the bell hard on that day! After I ring the bell tomorrow I'll visit with my radiation oncologist then head straight to the airport to spend the next two to three weeks with Dawn. I hope I'll be a good help to her. Brandon has accepted a new job with GE and will be based out of UTAH!!! He'll be starting up here on the 9th of March but we won't move Dawn and the girls until school is out and Dawn is feeing better. Thanks to all for your prayers and fasting. She is progressing well and the doctors feel confident she'll have a full recovery. It is impossible to express the gratitude I feel for the love and support I've been given over these past months. Thanks to all. I look forward to seeing Arizona friends and soakin' up the sun!!!

Thanks to everyone for your prayers for Dawn. She is finally starting to feel better and the doctors are optomistic that she'll be fully recovered in about six months. She is recovering at her mom's house with Brandon and the girls until Sunday when Shannon arrives to help them get settled at home. Shannon will stay for a week and make arrangements with family and friends to help out after she leaves. I talked to Dawn last night and she sounded great and is looking forward to "getting her life back". We love her dearly and count it a miracle that she and the baby are here and doing fine. Two ultrasounds confirm it's a GIRL!! Brandon, Zoe and Tatym can't wait to get their hands her. She will be #13 for Mike and I!! Dawn made the announcement to the family on Christmas morning by wearing a tee shirt jeweled with 07-07-09. I was the first to see it, but the last to get it!!! Needless to say, we had a wonderful Christmas with everyone here for two full weeks. It was the best Christmas ever. I've included a few pics from the holidays including our traditional Christmas Eve Nativity, and New Years Eve fondue with banging on pots and pans at midnight. I'm very grateful my doctors gave me time off in December to heal and be with my family. It has allowed me to handle the radiation quite well. Today I am half way through. I continue to be amazed at the love of the Lord and the blessings He showers upon me and my family. Once again, thank you, thank you, thank you for your love and prayers and support. I hope that each of you are well and happy. Please let me know what's happening in your life.

Update on Shirlene and Dawn

Shirlene has been going through her radiation treatment for the passed several weeks and is doing fantastic. It was so great to see her, and just how much she improves all the time. She was given the "OK" from ALL her Dr.'s to be here this week. They put off her radiation and herceptin until next week. She hasn't suffered any of the side affects from the radiation except a little fatigue, and hopefully she won't down the road. It was wonderful having her in town watching her enjoy all her granddaughters (all 10 of them were here). We sure missed Ian and Colton! Shirlene looks AMAZING and is doing so well, I think she'll definitely be up for our girls trip to New York this fall :) I know she has been anxious to post herself, but has been extremely busy!! After this weekend look forward to some of her Christmas pictures and more about her radiation treatment. I just wanted everyone to know she is doing so well.

Dawn has suffered a SEVERE head injury and was released from ICU late Monday night, and is now in a regular room to recover. She has had her moments, but is on the road to recovery. We have been told by neurologists that it's a miracle that she is doing as well as she is, but that it will be a long road ahead. She has a skull fracture and a subdural hematoma on her right side and a concussion on her left side. She has a few scrapes on her arm, leg, and back, but no other broken bones. She will be taken off the anti seizure medication soon and hopefully that will help with her nausea and fatigue. The baby is fine and I know that is a HUGE relief to both Dawn and Brandon and all of us as well. She still has her sense of humor and has been very talkative. She has been responsive from the very beginning and even remembers almost everything about that night.

We are so grateful for her progress, but know that it will take some time for her to feel 100%. Please continue to keep her in your prayers. We will continue updating everyone on her progress.

I wanted to take a picture of Shirlene and Dawn today while we were at the hospital, but it was a rough morning. We'll put pictures up soon. Just know that Dawn looks beautiful. She doesn't even have a bump or a bruise (where you can see anyway). When we got to the hospital on Sat. she still had her make up on. She is such a beautiful girl inside and out. We love her so much and are praying her a fast recovery.

Prayers Needed

We've had such great results with all of our dear family and friends and their prayers on behalf of Shirlene's recovery, that we would like everybody's prayers on behalf of Dawn. Friday night she had an accident and had some head trauma. She has been in ICU since. She is stable and doing well. Mike and Shirlene, and Shannon and her family are in Arizona. We would ask that you keep Dawn, Brandon and her family in your thoughts and prayers. We appreciate you all, and your constant love and support to our family.

Mike's 60th birthday

Mike turned 60 years old yesterday, January 7th!!! He's not too happy about it, but we're going to celebrate anyway. I'm hosting a little open house for him Saturday evening from 7 to 9 so if you're in the area please feel free to stop by. We had a fabulous time with our family over the holidays and hope you did, too. I'm feeling much better and getting geared up for radiation which will start this coming Tuesday. I will go 5 days a week for the next five weeks. Everyone tells me radiation is a "walk in the park" compared to chemo so I'm counting on it! I feel so blessed to have such great friends and family helping me along this journey. My testimony continues to grow as I feel the love of the Lord daily through your love and prayers and support. Thanks for your calls, visits, responses on the blog and e-mails. It really helps!!

Merry Christmas!

We are all getting very anxious for Christmas here. Tay, Susie and boys will fly in Monday evening. Kristen will brave the drive alone with her girls on Monday (Chris will fly in the 24th), and Brandon, Dawn and girls will drive up on the 23rd!!!!! We'll have a house FULL and I can hardly wait.
The Radiation Oncologist decided to postpone radiation for the month of December so I can recover from the effects of chemo, and it has made a huge difference. I'm continuing the Herceptin treatments and have no side effects at all. The Neurologist saw me two weeks ago and she couldn't believe how much I've improved and even gave me the go ahead to DRIVE!!!! I'm still on medication for tremors (due to the chemo attacking my nervous system) but the debilitating effects have subsided and I am ever so grateful. The infection (in the mastectomy site) did not clear up so I had outpatient surgery yesterday. The plastic surgeon removed the tissue expander and cleaned out the area. I'm feeling fine and will be doing great by the time everyone arrives.
I was able to go to our ward's "lunch bunch" on Wednesday afternoon and it was wonderful to be with everyone. Thursday evening was my book club Christmas party. I haven't attended for 25 years!!! It was fabulous. I am so grateful for the blessings I receive daily; especially my wonderful family and friends, and wish you all a very merry Christmas.

A Thankful Week

Monday my Oncologist gave the go ahead to continue with the Herceptin treatments so I went directly to the Infusion center after my appointment with him. GRATEFULLY I have not had any side effects and had a fabulous THANKSGIVING weekend.
Scott and Cyndee (Mike's brother and his wife) invited us to their home for THANKSGIVING dinner, and it was awesome. We loved being with them, their kids and grandkids while relishing a fantastic meal! THANK YOU Scott and Cyndee - we are very GRATEFUL to you. Chris brought his family to town for the weekend so we were BLESSED to spend Friday with them. We celebrated Olivia's 12th birthday lunching at Paradise Bakery, shopping at the District, and going to see "Twilight". Mike hauled us everywhere and Emrey and Haley were invited for her "special" day. THANK YOU Livy for a great day. I'm so GRATEFUL we had the opportunity to be with you!!!! After the movie everyone gathered at my home for dinner and birthday cake. It was a great BLESSING for me to be with my family. Sunday I was able to attend my meetings, and visit with ward friends. I'm GRATEFUL for this time of year when we take stock of our BLESSINGS, and count myself ever so lucky to be here.

A Grateful Day!

It's good to be among the living. Round five of chemo proved to be disastrous and Dr. Litton feels the risk of one more dose of taxotere or carboplatin is not worth permanent neurological damage or worse. I agree.
Two weeks ago I developed an infection that required a trip to the emergency room. After returning home I had a reaction to the medication and had to go back to the hospital via ambulance where they administered phenergan and I had a violent reaction to that. Three days later I was able to return home with the aid of Home Health Care. Mike and Shannon were trained in administering antibiotics through my pic line and they have proven to be extremely good "nurses" as they have cared for me literally 24/7 for the last few weeks. I'm still fighting the infection, but able to take antibiotics orally. The greater issue is neurological damage from the T and C chemo. Gratefully I am under the care of a fabulous Neurologist, Dr. Nancy Futrell, and making excellent progress. The fact that I can type (however slow) is a miracle to me and also gives me assurance that the damage is not permanent. It has only been a few days that I've been able to walk unassisted for many weeks, and I'm feeling stronger every day. The plan now is to continue with the Herceptin once every 21 days for the next 8 1/2 months. This is the most important drug for me and has mild if any side effects. Dr. Litton feels the nurses at the infusion center will be succesful in administering the Herceptin IV and so I was able to have the pic line removed. Our goal for my next treatment is the 24th if the infection is cleared. I'll meet with the Radiologist in December to determine when radiation will begin.
It is impossible to express the gratitude I feel for each one of you. Your love and concern has meant more to me than you'll ever know. Each phone call, note, response on the blog, visit, prayer and fast has strengthened and bouyed me up. "Fighting" cancer brought new meaning to the word after round four, and I'll admit there were a few days I wondered if I could really come out on top, but with the team I have behind me there was no doubt and I was able to catch a plane to sunny Arizona and spend a fabulous weekend with the family there. Shannon, Poppy, and the UT girls traveled by car to join the fun. Thanks to Chris and Kristen for the airline ticket, and Brandon for flying home with me. We had a wonderful time going to lunch, shopping at Designer Blvd., going to Streamers, bowling, and just hanging out. It was so good to see my AZ girls, and I think it helped them a lot to see me, too. Sunday was a treat to hear Chris and Kristen speak in church, and as always, I felt the talks were direct from the Lord to me. Their topic was from President Monson's last conference speech "Enjoy the Journey". I learned a lot, and hope to better in the coming days. (My first goal is not to moan at Shannon every time she brings me pills). I continue to be humbled, grateful, and amazed at the love and care I receive on a daily basis. I'm geared up and ready to take on round five for the next little while. Thank you once again my dear friends for all you do for me. I love hearing from you, reading your comments, and express special thanks for the meals, gifts, cards, garden produce, and especially your prayers. I feel the tender mercies of Lord daily because of your efforts. With love 'till next time.

Last fall we had the opportunity to visit Taylor and Susie in the Big Apple for a girls dream weekend extravaganza. Shirlene, Shannon, Kristen and I all flew over and spent our days enjoying each other's company in the midst of many Broadway plays, shopping on canal street, riding the Subway and Ferry, watching our backs at midnight in the Subway, eating in Little Italy, and much much more! I just thought I'd post a few pictures to share. We look forward to doing another girls trip next year once Shirlene has finished her treatments!! We love you Shirlene and feel so blessed to have such an amazing Mother-in Law.

This month has been alot of fun as we've welcomed fall. Having two chemo treatments in one month has made it the longest, and shortest month yet. On my good days friends and family have made it great! Here are a few pictures of some fun days I've had with my "Gilbert transplants" lunching at the Citrus Grill, a special day with Emrey, Haley, Abbey and Sofey at Gardner Village, and beautiful Fall in Brighton on our drive up to the Johnson Cabin. The family has enjoyed lots of yummy treats and fresh garden vegetables from neighbors and ward members. The ward has been incredible and we are all so appreciative of their many efforts. I feel so blessed to have such great friends, neighbors, and family members who love and care for me. Thanks to all for your visits, phone calls, and comments. I love you!!!

The Huntsman Center

Yesterday was my third chemo treatment which means I am half way through (yeah!!!!) I didn't think I would live through the second one to have to go to my third treatment, but sure enough week three came along and I started feeling better with every day. Mike took me to Deer Valley (thanks to Chuck and Kathie Horman) on Friday afternoon and we stayed in their condo and enjoyed the beautiful scenery and weather, shopped and ate along Main Street in Park City, and had the most fabulous brunch in the world at the Stein Erikson Lodge in Deer Valley. We went to Fast and Testimony meeting at a ward in Park City where the Bishop was conducting and bore his testimony. He and his wife burried their 30 something son just two weeks ago from melanoma. The son left a wife with two small children along with grieving parents and siblings. It wasn't hard for me to put a smile on my face as Shannon drove me to the Huntsman Center for my chemotherapy knowing that there is light at the end of the tunnel. The Huntsman Center is absolutely fabulous. I can't think there is a better facility anywhere. The doctors, nurses, and staff are the most caring group I've ever seen. Dr. Litton has a great sense of humor and we laugh our heads off about all the things that are happening to me. I've been on alot of steroids this past month and wow, the changes are incredible. Luckily I don't have to stay on them and hopefully some of the side effects will subside soon. Chris wanted to know why he hasn't seen pictures of me on this blog, but I'm not so sure I want my fat red face plastered on here for the whole world to see, except it might give everyone a good laugh. It's bad enough to be bald, and flat, now add the pounds and red face - trust me I'm no beauty in the pageant!
Back to the Huntsman Center. The Infusion room is really interesting. The whole thing is open with a beautiful salt water fish tank, a kitchen stocked with all kinds of snacks and drinks and games and puzzels, and the chairs are lined up about 4to a section and it's great meeting new friends each time I go. Yesterday I met a man who is retiring from Dentistry. He and his lovely wife had lots of plans until last week when he was diagnosed with terminal cancer. He's taking chemo in hopes of buying a few month or hopefully more. Carol was in the chair next to me. She's about 10 years older than me and was diagnosed with lung cancer in July. She's not sure what her prognosis will be until they can shrink the tumor to do surgery. In the beginning, I wasn't sure I wanted to sit in this big open room with tons of other people all hooked up, but Jon Huntsman has been through cancer twice, and he knew what he was doing here. I've loved meeting these wonderful, positive people who help me realize how blessed I am. Thanks to everyone for your phone calls, notes, food, gifts and especially for your prayers. Mike took me to the Temple Friday morning and it was a humbling experience for me being there and knowing that my name is added to the prayer roll. Thank you, all. I love and miss those of you who are away. Thanks for being in touch.

A Bad Hair Day.......

Day 16 from my first chemo was the dreaded hair day. Dr. Litton prepared me to be ready for for the "fallout" which would hit day sixteen - give or take two days either way. My darling hairdresser brought over a pair of chic pink buzzers for the event and so we waited. Day sixteen (Thurs 8/14) it was coming out by the handfulls, but over the years everyone has told me I have enough hair for two people, and for the first time I knew what they were talking about. I was lucky enough to have enough of my own hair left to go to a wedding shower on Friday night, and lunch on Saturday (looking thin, but still got the thumbs up from Shan). However, Saturday evening Mike and I were working out in the front yard when a neighbor drove up in his car to say hello. We walked to the curb to chat for a minute when a gust of wind hit and yes, you can imagine seeing a huge lock of my hair fly down the street. I casually held my hand over my eyes to block the "sun" and when he left I looked at Mike and his only comment was, "you definitely need to wear your wig to dinner tonight". The girls had been waiting for the big day of the shaving party, so Saturday evening we gathered in my bathroom and everyone had a go at it (except Emrey). She watched from the doorway, but just couldn't do it. Haley, Abbey and Sofey had a ball taking turns with the sissors and shavers and Shannon and Mike finished the job. We all laughed our heads off and found out that no one needs hair quite as bad as grandma does, and we're all grateful that it will grow back. For now I'm sporting my wig and hats and my workout/sleeping wig (modeled by the girls) which I refer to as my "HAIRSPAY" wig. Luckily the bangs are detachable so they have become Sofey's new hairpiece which she velcros to her own bangs. Actually I think I look like John Travolta when I wear it, but only those of you who will be sleeping over get to see that little transformation. Brandon was here last night and had a good laugh. Maybe down the road I'll be brave enough to leave the house in hats and scarves, but for now I depend pretty much on my one good wig. I have to say one thing about cancer, it is impossible to prepare yourself for all the new and "exciting" things you get to experience on a daily basis. Those of you who have gone through this either for yourself, or a loved one can relate. I am however very grateful that I don't have to experience everything all at once, and never alone. The Lord in his mercy carries us through each phase tenderly, lovingly, and if we lean on Him we gain strength to carry on. Having Shannon and her family here has been a tremendous blessing. Now that most of the really tough stuff is behind me it will be easier to let the girls go back to school which starts Monday, and I can be excited about the progress they're making on their new home. Mike has been an absolute trooper, and continues to strengthen me and bouy me up. He even lies about how beautiful I am. Well, you know what they say: "Love is blind" and I'm sure grateful for that! Once again, thank you, thank you, thank you for your love and constant prayers. I fall short in so many ways, but your prayers are heard on my behalf, and I love and thank you for it. I've loved visits from you and hope to see you if you're ever in South Jordan. My love and gratitude to all.

The Men In My Life

My daughters and granddaughters mean the world to me, as you know. They have all taken exceptional care of me (I think Shannon had to bathe, dress, and do my hair 21 times) and it is imposssible for me to express my gratitude adequately. However, I know I would not make it through this without the wonderful men in my life as well.
My plastic surgeon is a wonderful man (his wife is a breast cancer survivor)and he reminded me today that many husbands can't take the pressure of taking care of a wife with breast cancer, and many end up getting divorced. It made me think again of how blessed and grateful I am for my exceptional husband. He is my best friend and support. I'm especially grateful for the miracles I've received from his priesthood blessings. I'm also extremely grateful for my wonderful sons. Jaren has to put up living with his mother-in-law (can you imagine!?) and is so sweet and helpful. He's also Mike's favorite riding pal and I'm thankful for that, too. Chris, Brandon, and Taylor have been faithful in calling me and I've enjoyed long happy conversations on a regular basis. Their love and devotion gives me the courage to carry on. I'm so proud of the fabulous husbands, fathers, and priesthood holders they are. They are an inspiration to me.
Now if you've seen my the rest of my blog, you'll notice the other two men in my life. They're the ones holding the We love grandma sign. Ian and Colton. They call me regularly from NY and Ian always sings a primary song to me (all verses!). I can't even tell you how much I miss them and cannot wait until I get to see them again. Thanks guys for your love and support. I couldn't do this without you!!!

Today was day two since Shirlene had her first chemotherapy treatment. She is doing great. She seems to have two paces. Either extremely energetic and anxious or passed out exhausted. She has been waiting patiently to get up to Midway to find some home decor for her house and decided today was the day. We were completely shocked that she would have the energy to go but she had her mind made up and said she definately felt up to it. I also think she is growing slightly tired of her house since she's spent so much time in it this past month. I know she also did it for me knowing I wanted to get there before I had to head back home tomorrow. So for those reasons and with Shirlene feeling up to it we made it there this afternoon and all found fun, unique decor for our homes. We ended up having a late lunch and enjoyed the car ride home sleeping, except for Shannon who had to drive of course.

My girls and I have had a great time being here with Shirlene and Mike and Shannon's family. We are going to miss being so close but know we'll be back up soon. Shirlene, you're amazing! Thank you for the great example you've always been and continue to be to us. We love you.

Chemo begins

Noon tomorrow will be my first chemotherapy. For those of you in the know the drugs I'll be given are Taxotere, Carboplatin and Herceptin. I looked them up on the internet to see all the fun I'm in for and if you're interested you'll find them on www.chemocare.com/bio Mike, Shannon and I went to a chemo class last week and I chose Mondays as my treatment day so that I'll be feeling good by the weekend. Treatments will be every 21 days with December 7th being the last one. Each treatment will last about 4 hours. We were told in class that the first few days can be rough, but by day 4 or 5 I should be feeling pretty good, and if I don't have too many side effects I could even do a little traveling on the second or third week (NYC here I come!) Dr. Litton said he has a patient who goes skiing after therapy, and other patients who are positive he is trying to kill them. He said, "I'm not saying this isn't real......for them", but he suspects I'll be somewhere in between although I'd like to think I'll be up for skiing! Dr. Allred was able to remove my drains on Monday and Dr. Anderson gave me thumbs up to start using my arms on Wednesday so I've been in heaven these last few days as I can finally shower, dress, and do my own hair. It was also great to be able to go to church for the first time in weeks today. The priests in my ward have been bringing the sacarament to my home and while I have considered this a wonderful blessing there is nothing like fellowshipping with the saints, and feeling the spirit there. The Lord has blessed me abundantly with loving, caring family, friends, neighbors, and ward members whom I love dearly. I can't say I'm grateful to have breast cancer, but I am grateful to have my eyes opened to the tender mercies of the the Lord because of it. Once again, thanks for your love and support. It's been great to see so many of you, and I look forward to more visits.

Wigging Out!

I think I'm a really good sport to let the girls post these pictures!!! We did have a blast shopping for my wig after a fun birthday lunch at Zin's for Kristen. The girls talked me into going for the one with highlights so when I'm not sporting the shinny cranium this will be my new look. I went for an EKG and more blood tests today, then visited with the surgeon's nurse to see if I could have the last two drains removed (I promise that is NOT my stomach) but unfortunately they will continue to be my very close friends for a few more days. It has been absolutely fabulous having family here. Chris and his family are on their way home, but Brandon and Dawn joined us last weekend and they'll be here for awhile. I've loved watching all the granddaughters laugh and play and dance and have good times together. Kristen and Dawn have been so sweet and helpful. I don't know many daughters-in-law who would help their fat, old mother-in-law the way they have, but it's been good for Shan to have a break. It has really lifted my spirits to have so much family around and I know it is a sweet tender mercy from the Lord. I've had a couple of surprise visits from Arizona friends as well - what a treat! I love having visitors. Thank you all for your continued love and prayers. I could not do this without your help.

Good News

After a week of holding our breath, we let out a sigh of relief today after meeting with the Oncologist. The good news is...the cancer has not spread beyond the lymph nodes, and the pathology on the lymph node dissection showed only 2 of 6 nodes were malignant. Yeah!! Chemotherapy will begin on July 28th and treatments will continue every three weeks until mid December. After Christmas, Radiation will begin everyday for 5 weeks. After that, hormone and biologic therapy will continue for 5 years. My mom is feeling extrememly grateful and very blessed at this time. She's a little tired and worn out, but continues to strengthen all of us with her positive attitude and her unwavering faith. She has a long road to recovery ahead of her, but I am convinced that she will beat this and come out of it stronger than ever!

Chris, Kristen, Livy, Ivy, Chloe, and Lily arrived early in the morning on the 4th and were up and ready for the annual Pepperwood parade which started at 8:00 am. Mike took lots of pictures so I felt like I had a good view of the show. Kathie Horman (grandma to Chris' girls) made a fabulous Genie float which she pulled with her golf cart and the girls looked great riding on it dressed in genie costumes. Lily was riding on the back of the float facing backwards and ate more candy than she threw so she got a little sick by the end of the parade. In her lispy words " Gwamma, it'th not gweat sthlidding off a float!" Emrey and Sofey rode in grandpa Johnson's decorated Argo and he treated them to several 360's along the route. Abbey and her motorcycle were decked out in red, white and blue but the entourage moved way too slow for her! Haley was in heaven as the only horsewoman. Rusty (her horse) looked great with his new shoes and bright red halter. All in all everyone had a great time and it was a perfect way to start the weekend celebrations. Everyone came to the house after the parade and we loved being together for the day. We left all the girls home in the afternoon and enjoyed a two hour lunch at Kneaders on the patio. Because of daylight savings fireworks start after 9:00pm so Mike and I watched them from our bedroom window. Today was another fun filled day for everyone starting out with golfing for the guys and them the adults savoring a fabulous lunch at Zupa's (Kristen's favorite place).
It has been such a blessing to feel the healing powers of the Savior as I'm gaining strength daily and healing from the surgery. I'm confident that I'll be able to start treatment on schedule and grateful to everyone for all their help and loving care. I'm pretty spoiled by my family. We have truly been grateful for the delicious meals and fabulous treats that our friends have been bringing to us. You will never know how much it means to us and what blessing it is to come home after a long day at the hospital and have a beautiful meal ready to eat. I need to send thank you notes, but I want those of you who have sent flowers to know that my home looks (and smells) beautiful and happy because of the wonderful bouquets. I have never seen such unique and georgeous flowers!! Thanks to: Bonnie, Vicki, & Betty; Kiewit "family"; WW Clyde; Jeff & Connie; Steve, Angie & Owen; Julie & Danny, Dick & Tony, Bill & Cal; and neighbors who helped plant 4 flats in my yard! And tons of love and thanks to Scott and Cyndee for the gifts and visits.

Abbey and Sofey deserve a medal of honor for nursing today. Shannon needed to go to Cosco for us today and I assured her that I'd be just fine so she left Abbey and Sofey in charge. Unfortunately the medications I'm on sort of caught up with me and it was pretty wild for about half an hour with my two little nurses scurrying around and taking extra good care of me. After they got everything cleaned up they puffed up my bed pillows and got me back in bed, turned on a movie and then crawled in bed with me until Shannon got home. Pretty remarkable for a 6 and 9 year old!!! I'm feeling great tonight and look forward to hearing all about the the 4th festivities. What a blessing to live in this great country. Have a wonderful 4th and weekend!!! I love you all.

The Day After......

Hello everyone! I'm loving this blog thing....I feel connected to everyone and what a blessing that is. It's been a long day, but a really good one. I was released from the hospital to go directly to the oncologist and it was great to meet with him and learn more about this disease and how we will proceed. There are so many factors to consider when treating breast cancer and we now have all but a couple of pieces to complete the puzzle. Chemo will not start any sooner than the 21st as my body needs to heal from the surgery. The chemo will go for 18 weeks, so I should be done by Christmas! After that I'll do radiation therapy for five weeks. Biologic therapy will continue for another eight months with hormone therapy taking five years. Mike and I feel very confident with Dr. Litton and we're really impressed with the Huntsman Cancer center. It is quite the facility with all kinds of free classes for patients and their family and friends. It's only about a 20 minute drive from my home which makes it even better.
Thank you for your love and support...I feel it and it does make a difference. I'm so grateful for each one of you and hope to be able to see as many of you as possible over the next few months. Chris and Kristen and the girls are coming up tomorrow and it will be sooo good to see them. Dawn and Brandon will come up around the 12th and Taylor and Susie hope to visit later on this summer as Taylor just started his Pediatric Dental residency in NY. I am feeling good, and have not had to take any pain meds since yesterday. I'm going to do everything I can to let my body heal over the next couple of weeks and hope that Mike and Shannon will have a little reprieve as well. Successful Surgery

The surgery went very well today and both surgeons were very positive and hopeful about things. My mom feels good and is in great spirits. Everyone who knows her, knows of her great strength and determination. She will meet with the Oncologist tomorrow and is looking forward to moving on with her treatment. She wanted me to let everyone know that she has faith in her doctors and faith that the Lord is aware of her and of her needs. Thanks to all who have sent flowers, emails, offered food and kept my mom in your prayers--your love and support is a constant blessing.

The journey begins...

Dear Family and Friends,
In less than eight hours I will begin my journey to recovery of breast cancer. As most of you know I was diagnosed just one week ago and already we have been blessed with great miracles and tender mercies from the Lord. I know He is near and will continue to bless me and my family, and we thank you for your contined love and prayers. In the morning I'll undergo surgery for a bilateral modified radical mastectomy with removal of lymph nodes from under my left arm. Dr's Erik Anderson and Bryce Allred will perform the surgery at the new Intermountain Medical Center, and on Wednesday I'll meet with the oncologist, Dr. Litton at the same facility. I'm told I'll probably start Chemo immediately although I have no idea what the schedule and time frame will be, but I'm sure I'll know soon enough. When I'm finished with chemo I will undergo radiation and then reconstruction so I guess I'll have to bow out of the upcoming ward welfare assignment! I planned to go wig shopping today, but opted to soak up the sun for a couple of hours with Shan and the girls at Lifetime, so I'm hoping for a few good days to check out the hair scene before week two of chemo.
Thanks to my wonderful ward family and friends who joined in fasting and prayer yesterday-a miracle was granted. I was struggling with the previously planned procedure to operate on the left side only. My good friend and neighbor, Dr. John Nichols came over Sunday night and offered some very good advice. I was prepared to call Dr. Anderson this morning to discuss my concerns, but to my surprise he called me and said he'd been thinking about my upcoming surgery and felt we needed to remove both sides, but we would have to postpone for a week due to the fact it would now require more O.R. time and a plastic surgeon. He expressed his concern about postponing chemo for another week, but felt there was no alternative. I thanked him and hung up the phone. Within minutes he called back to inform me that he had lined up the plastic surgeon and extended the OR time and we were back on track. Thank you, friends and family; fasting and prayer works!
It is impossible to put into words the love and appreciation I feel for my wonderful, faithful, practically perfect husband, children, and grandchildren. Sweet memories of our recent family vacation will sustain me over the next weeks and months, and I can hardly wait to hug you and be with you again. You are the reason I will beat this.
